Ergo by Natuzzi Italia wins Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2019

Designed by Ross Lovegrove, the collection was recognised for its organic design.

The Ergo collection, designed by Ross Lovegrove for Natuzzi Italia, has won a prestigious 2019 Red Dot Award, in recognition of its organic design, which the brand says was inspired by the forms of nature and the use of renewable and recyclable materials.

In 2019 more than 4200 people – putting forward design concepts, research projects and prototypes from companies, designers and research institutes in 48 countries – took part in the competition. The international expert panel of design selected 265 design concepts among 34 item categories. Ergo triumphed in the ‘Design Concept’ category.

Pasquale Junior Natuzzi, Creative Director and Stylist of Natuzzi, received the award and said: “The Ergo collection is the synthesis of the past, the present and the future. It represents an intrepid and an unconventional behaviour, while spreading the ‘Made in Italy’ message and always remembering its identity. The Red Dot Award is a great result [and verifies] the new Natuzzi design vision and the drive to lower environmental impact, both in terms of materials and energy consumption.”

The Ergo collection includes a bed, chaise-longue, chandelier, valet stand, chest of drawers, floor lamp, rug and mirror. The furniture boasts FSC-certified wood from sustainably managed forests, adhering to strict environmental, social and economic standards. Its components interlock seamlessly, so that each piece can be put together with no need for metal parts or screws. The water-based adhesives used are formaldehyde-free and all finishes are made with natural wax, while the only metal used is aluminium, which is endlessly recyclable. The textile fibres used for the upholstery are organic linen, wool and cotton, the mattress is 100% natural latex and the light bulbs used are low-energy consumption LEDs.

The Ergo collection – introduced during the Salone del Mobile 2019 in Milan – is now being showcased at the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore as part of a temporary exhibition of this year’s award-winning products.
